Play for Portland is a relaxed, recreational dodgeball tournament (using foam balls) based on a simple yet meaningful idea:

Our public spaces - parks, community centers, plazas, squares, and more - belong to all of us.

This event will benefit candidates who commit to pursuing policy actions to make our public spaces easier to access, in particular by reducing barriers to booking them for community events. These barriers include costs to book the spaces, long wait times for permits, and expensive insurance requirements.

We use play - one of the core things people book public spaces for - as an activity, to raise funds for candidates and help them get elected so they can fix this problem.

With your support, we can make our spaces truly belong to all of Portland.

Player registration is $35 and is through: https://tinyurl.com/playforportland

Schedule:

  • 8:30-9:25 AM Registration and Check-In

  • 9 AM-9:25 AM Warmups

  • 9:25-9:30 AM Welcome and Announcements

  • 9:30 AM-12:30 PM Round-Robin Games (with a break and announcements every hour)

  • 12:30-1:15 PM Break

  • 1:15-1:20 PM Intro to Double-Elimination Bracket

  • 1:20 PM- Double-Elimination Bracket (teams will start being eliminated by 2 PM)

Within the round-robin period, there will be four 12-minute rounds in an hour, followed by an all-teams break.
Teams will be playing roughly 2/3 of the time in the four 12-minute rounds, and taking a break (or reffing, if you’ve played dodgeball before!) during the other 1/3 of the time.

Rules:

The short version: We’ll be playing using Dodgeball PDX’s recreational league rules, but with a different ball type and two rules changes. We’re playing with 8.25” foam balls. When blocking, any incidental contact to the hand below the wrist is considered part of the block (and you’re not out). Finally, any ball which directly hits the head of a player who is not crouching down will result in no out (for either the thrower or defending player). Our goal is no headshots.

(We are not endorsed by Dodgeball PDX.)
